The IT Industry has been seeing increased struggle in attracting and retaining talent. Keeping the good, hardworking people interested in the company has been a concern in two of their top challenges faced in 2022. In truth the IT industry should be the industry that is gaining traction the most during this time period of remote learning, remote working, remote creating, remote everything. Yet the IT industry faces a very crucial concern of attracting, growing and retaining talent during this window of opportunity to skyrocket to the top. What can the IT industry do to fix this dilemma?
For one, for people like me who have quite a bit of experience in the IT industry workforce, what attracts our attention is a wonderful company environment with genuine people who are equally passionate in their field, know what they are doing, and want to continue to facilitate the growth of the talent they recruit. Having a growing environment where one can work peacefully, and their work is appreciated is very important and a rare opportunity many will not ignore or give up. Any position with a great work environment and training in this remote world, is ideal for a beginner in this industry. The interviewee decides to go through the process and gets hired. Then he will continue to look for a new position from the beginning of his career while in that company and will not have a vested interest in what that company is trying to achieve.
A concern that interviewees face is false advertising positions by IT Companies. If the IT company doesn’t currently need new talent and needs to focus on company growth before hiring new talent, then it is better to be honest about the company standing and not hire new talent that will not have anything to do. Sometimes companies completely stop responding to the interviewee during the interview process because the company doesn’t want to hire anyone at this time. With the trend in the pandemic of people quitting their jobs and starting up their own businesses, talents are no longer approaching big corporate businesses and instead more competition is coming up. Companies are missing talent that would grow their industry to new heights because talent is not finding what they are looking for in the IT companies currently.
If a company continually promotes employees of all tiers in the company, gaining new skills through training and free class enrollment, it will increase the talent level of the employees and increase comradery among employees and boss. This will increase employee productivity and create a positive environment that will attract more talent.
To keep talent, employees must feel valued, that their work means something and that they are achieving something that benefits the company. Setting up valuable goals that impact the company and having managers set up projects for employees to achieve those goals while also showing the direct impact these projects have on the company will encourage employees. This will keep talent within the company because they feel valued.
Most of all, look to your retired employees who worked in the company 20 years ago. If the company is young, then reach out to others who worked in the same industry 20 years ago but are retired now. Ask them: how was the atmosphere when they were working? Culture? Climate? What did they achieve in their time of working? What did their generation achieve during their time in the work force for the IT industry? Compare their achievements with the achievements of this generation, but also remember what we have achieved today is built on what the previous generation has built.
